From Russia and Estonia with love: breeders Angelika Panova (Tallinn) and Tatyana Shulaeva (Yekaterinburg) about Russian blue cats

When and where did you meet the Russian Blue breed?

Angelika Panova: Almost by accident. They were looking for a pet, and an ad came to my eyes. I found information on the Russian Blue breed on the Internet and almost immediately fell in love with it.

Tatyana Shulaeva: I first saw Russian blue cats in 1998. Aroused great interest. Then even breeders could not really define the qualities of this breed.

Can you recall what was your first impression of these cats?

Angelica Panova: Grace and intelligence.

– Please name the best qualities of this breed.

Angelika Panova: Intelligent, graceful, tactful, patient, caring, non-aggressive … and so on!

And now, if possible, about the shortcomings of J. Breeders often say that cats simply do not have their favorite breeds. Can you say the same about Russian blue?

Angelika Panova: Disadvantages ??? If I say that they are, then I will deceive … They really are not!

Tatyana Shulaeva: The only drawback is the lack of such.

Why did you decide to become not just an owner, but a breeder of this breed?

Angelika Panova: Because I want to derive my ideal within the framework of the standard. This is difficult and at the same time an interesting job.

Tatyana Shulaeva: Why is the breeder specifically Russian Blue? The first cat of this breed was acquired with the right to breed, but not at all for this purpose. After receiving a couple of litters and delving into the intricacies of this breed, I felt: I was so drawn in that it was impossible to break out of these networks.

What type of Russian blue – “American” or “European” – is more attractive to you personally?

Angelika Panova: I’ll answer honestly – I don’t like either extreme “American” or extreme “European”. In my cattery, there are several animals of the American type, but there are also cats of the European type. But I am more inclined to the European type. The main thing, in my opinion – the animal should be harmonious.

Tatyana Shulaeva: I like both types of Russian blue. Both European and American. The main thing is to maintain balance.

What attracts you to the “mermaids” in the first place: external beauty or character traits?

Angelika Panova: Expression of the eyes and become, character … Of these three qualities, I can not give priority to any.

Tatyana Shulaeva: Character traits are paramount.

How many Russian blue cats can coexist in one house at the same time?

Angelika Panova: The house is different, it is very individual, but it should be comfortable for all the residents of the house. And do not forget: this is a hobby, not a business.

Tatyana Shulaeva: How many owners will be able to organize life. The main thing is that everyone should be comfortable.

By what age are the eyes of Russian blue kittens painted green prescribed by the standard?

Angelika Panova: By two or three months.

They say that the Russian blue is especially clean. Is it so? And who is more neat – cats or cats?

Is it true that Russian blue needs to be washed only before the exhibition?

Angelika Panova: This is very individual – as necessary or, more precisely, if necessary.

Tatyana Shulaeva: It is obligatory to wash before exhibitions, as well as during molting to wash off excess hair.

What if the Russian blue cat sheds a lot? After all, plentiful molting is not peculiar to this breed?

Angelika Panova: So, there is some kind of virus, it is necessary to seek the advice of a veterinarian.

There is an opinion that Russian blue should not be combed out. Do you agree with this?

Angelika Panova: There is no need to comb them out.

Tatyana Shulaeva: Russian blue can not be combed out before the exhibition. If the animal is not exposed or a lot of time elapses between shows, combing is even desirable.

Are stripes or marks on the hair of adult cats of this breed acceptable?

Angelika Panova: There may be residual strips, but all this should be appropriate for age. In adulthood, no marks should be.

Tatyana Shulaeva: In adult Russian blue, marks or stripes on wool are NOT allowed.

What do you do if kittens with white spots on wool are born in the litter of Russian Blue?

Angelika Panova: This has not happened in my practice.

Tatyana Shulaeva: These kittens are not born to me. And if he were born, he would grow up with all the other kittens and be sold neutered. This is the story of the breed.

At what age do you give kittens to their new owners?

Angelika Panova: According to WCF rules and good traditions – no earlier than 12 weeks. This is if inside the country, if the kitten goes abroad, then from 16 to 18 weeks.

Do you maintain relationships with the new owners of your kittens? Can they contact you for advice?

Angelika Panova: Mandatory. We maintain a relationship. I will say more, under the terms of the contract, they must, with a certain frequency, send me photos of growing pets.

Tatyana Shulaeva: I have contacts from all the owners of my kittens. Sometimes they come to me with various questions.

I had to read about the hypoallergenic nature of the Russian blue. Are they really hypoallergenic?

Angelika Panova: I won’t say that it’s 100% – I’m not sure about that – but I’ll say from experience that kittens moved to allergic homes, but previously future owners with allergies came to our house to check their reaction to cat wool.

Tatyana Shulaeva: I had to read about the hypoallergenicity of Russian Blue, but they cannot be called hypoallergenic. A person needs to know what exactly he is allergic to. Allergy sufferers came to me several times to test. Allergy was manifested. But these people did not know exactly what they were allergic to.

Do you give nutrition tips to people buying kittens from you? What can you advise on this issue?

Angelika Panova: Recently, a lot of professional feed from different companies is being sold. Food is a very personal choice. Each breeder chooses animal feed by sampling. I can only say that the feed must be of high quality, complete, balanced. And, of course, not expired.

Tatyana Shulaeva: With kittens, a package of feed always leaves for a new home.

How much does a Russian blue breed kitten cost?

Angelika Panova: 🙂 Are we talking about kittens of a pet class or brid class? The cost depends on the breed qualities of the animal.

Tatyana Shulaeva: The cost of a kitten of the Russian blue breed depends on many parameters.

How long have the Russians been living in blue? Are you aware of longevity among cats of this breed?

Angelika Panova: As far as I know, they live up to 20 years. It all depends on conditions, nutrition, genetics.

Tatyana Shulaeva: Several times a kitten was bought from me after leaving the first Russian blue on a rainbow. The cat of the most venerable age was 18 years old.

With what words could you confess your love to Russian Blue cats?

Angelica Panova: As Leonardo da Vinci said: “ Even the smallest of cats is perfection.” The feeling is hard to put into words … I can simply say – I LOVE !!!
