Once the gardener was asked what to do to get a real English lawn. He replied simply: “You need to regularly cut and care for him.” “But I also cut my hair regularly,” the questioner said, “… for three hundred years,” the gardener finished the sentence.
Russian Blue is a rare and unique breed. Like … a real English lawn.
The most aristocratic breed, the familiar stranger, the Blue archangel, the blue dream, the royal cat.
Yes, this breed is not one of those that immediately catches the eye. The cat is medium-sized. The body is stretched, long limbs and tail. 3-5 kg for cats is the norm, cats are slightly larger. The breed is not distinguished by any design delights and mutations such as swirling ears, wool or tail, special miniature, hairless or gigantism. Russian blue is not a cat of extreme appearance. This is a pure classic. Looking at it, one involuntarily recalls the principle of the Golden Section: nothing superfluous, nothing elaborate, only clear lines and the beauty of proportions. Russian non-Russian cat, soft green-eyed treasure, emeralds in silver … Yes, yes, yes. This is all about her! And everything is true! Only when you catch a glimpse of it, you won’t immediately understand why this blue short-haired cat, which seems very simple, is called so exquisitely.
They have been arguing about the origin of Russian blue for a long time, and these disputes continue today. But it is absolutely proved that the breed was laid by the cats Dvina, Kola, Lingpopo, Yula, Olga, and Fashoda, brought from the shores of the White Sea, from Arkhangelsk to England. Their appearance reminded little of modern Russian blues: they were squat, with longish, not always soft hair, some had white spots, stripes, their eyes were not green. These legendary cats and cats are the fathers and founding mothers of the breed. Almost all pedigrees of Russian blues of the world go back to them.
Back in 1871, the progenitors of the breed (they were then called Arkhangelsk cats) participated in the very first cat show in the world in London. We also know that British, Siamese and simply beautiful non-pedigree cats of blue color left their mark on the Russian blue pedigrees. That is, the history of this breed is rooted in the distant past, and in order to prove the antiquity of the breed, mythology is not needed: just open the pedigrees. There are breeds born only in the 20th century. Well, ours has several centuries of purposeful selection by many generations of breeders around the world!
Russian Blue is a healthy breed, with good immunity and very harmonious. The main thing in its assessment is balance, lines, and proportions. The wedge-shaped head shape, a flat skull, and clear profile lines are simply the joy of a draftsman: everything is exactly the same as in a ruler – the line of the forehead, the line of the nose, the straight line between the ears and from the tip of the nose to the chin! Vibrissae pads and a strong, pronounced chin stand out in relief. From this, the cat seems “smiling.” But her smile is not puppet-sweet and glamorous, like Barbie’s – it is a smile of the mysterious and restrained Mona Lisa in her feelings…
